@JamesThoenes: Very reliable, for sure, but sometimes, WordPress gets a little .. stuck, for the lack of a better word. Mind you, it might be my fault on the configuration side; I can’t tell you how many times I’ve reimaged the server. Best of luck nabbing one, though! They are tons of fun once the learning curve is over (and it sounds like you’ve long passed yours).

@Jeremy Lim: Jeremy, if your running a Linux host I wouldn’t bother with the reboot. It’s not like Windows and the services your running are most likely very reliable. Unless there is a security update it’s not really needed. Critical Unix and Linux servers often only get a yearly maintenance reboot.
I am hoping I’ll soon outgrow the account I have now and move up to a VPS or dedicated server.

Daniel, FTP is not hard. I would recommend the FireFTP extension for Firefox. It has worked better than some paid FTP programs I have used.
With FTP, you enter in the connection settings (address, username and password) then you can just select files in a folder on your computer and send them to the folder you have in the window on the other side of the FTP program. Depending on the program sometimes you can just drag and drop the files like you would on your computer too.

Amen! I’ve had bad experiences with half a dozen hosts before finally settling on Slicehost. Starting at $20 a month (where Hostgator starts at $4.95) and having to configure your server from SCRATCH, it was a little daunting, but now that I’ve gone through it, I have a much better appreciation for running servers, and my site has never been more stable. (I reboot it .. maybe once a month, and only for good measure.)
