I’m right there with you, I often times find that the homepage will outrank the actual post page for a while, but then it usually will catch up a bit later.

I guess that is because of what you said about the extra strength of the homepage?

I am still a bit foggy if this is the best way to use excerpts, I use the more tag myself…

Do you still recommend this setup today?

AZ – I definitely recommend using the more feature or excerpts. You don’t want category pages outranking the individual posts.
I only use more here but I also use excerpts on another blog. In that case the blog archive uses more and category and tags use excerpts – this should be really effective. The only question is how and if your theme uses excerpts. I am not sure if the plugin to make a feed full even if you use more or excerpts is widely available.
The more feature is always easy to adapt and is well supported. You can prepare to use excerpts in the future by taking a few minutes and making one with each post now.

Just when i wanted to start using excerpts, I fell on this post. Now, I am somehow stuck. I really don’t know whether to implement excerpts or not.

I prefer the to excerpt on most of my blogs, particularly for the reason you stated above- there are more chances to catch the interest of the reader with more articles on the home page. I will be interested to see in your next post to see how you address the issue- using the “more” feature or actually writing excerpts.

Dwayne – That’s how it should work. Sometime in the next few days I’ll have a post on the method I used. I’m not sure about Blogger though.

I like that way that you have it set up now. To me it looks more professional. Although I get your updates via email so I get the full post anyway. But when I visit a page that is using excerpts, I see more of the articles that they have written, rather than just the last one and leaving.
